Welcome to Baliem Valley! Once one of the most inaccessible and mysterious areas of Papua, this used to be a destination for dramatic and often deadly dangerous expeditions set by missionaries in the 1960’s and early 70’s. Today the town of Wamena has become the last outpost of civilization in the region and a starting point for expeditions exploring the lands of Dani, Lani and Yali tribes. You will also visit the village of Jiwika – a place where members of the Dani tribe preserve the smoked mummy of their distant ancestor. With Additional Cost here, the participants you could take part in the traditional Dani feast and witness the traditional way of roasting pigs using hot stones as well as staging fights still organized by a majority of the tribes during important events.

Day 01: Jayapura Arrival – By Flight Wamena, Panorama, Traditional Houses (-/L/-).

Arrive at Sentani Airport of Jayapura and take a short flight to Wamena with schedule 10:20am or 12:30am (baggage allowed for this flight is 10kg only per passenger, as you can leave your unnecessary baggage in Jayapura with us before leaving. (Please note: the flights are delayed very often due bad weather, technical problem, operational of flight). After arriving in Wamena, transfer to and overnight at The Baliem Pilamo Hotel or similar. We begin our tour to Aikima in direction to the northern part of the Baliem Valley. Few kilometers from Town by drive to Aikima village to explore the Local traditional people of baliem valley. Along the way you will find the Danis working in their sweet potatoes fields and will see their daily activities. Arrive at Suroba, walk through the pine forest, enjoy the beautiful nature setting and crossing a bridge over Aike river before you arrive at the main road where the car is waiting for you. We will hike in 1-2 hours through the beautiful countryside and traditional houses of Dani people. Lunch in box is provided. Dinner will be on your account.

Day 02: Salt Spring, Mummy, Traditional Dani Houses (B/L/-).

In the morning we drive up to Jiwika in the central Baliem Valley. Our one hour trek begins at the base of the mountain and ascends 300 meters through a beautiful rainforest, reaching the traditional salt spring of a Dani clan. Clothed in their traditional costumes, the native inhabitants will demonstrate the old techniques of the salt production. Following the demonstration, we will have our lunch on the mountains base then walk down to a Kurulu hamlet, where a very old mummy of the famous Dugum clan is proudly presented for your viewing. Afterwards the women show us how they brought brine is processed. In the vicinity we will see more picturesque hamlets. Everywhere the friendly natives offer their arts and crafts, weapons and curiosities for our inspection. In the afternoon drive back to the Hotel. Lunch in box is provided and accommodation at hotel, dinner will be on your account.

Day 03: Trekking South Baliem Gorge (B/L/-).

In the morning we drive to the southern Baliem Valley. The road ends in a village called Sogogmo. Our walking tour along the powerful Baliem River begins here. First a suspension bridge has to be crossed. After that the tour goes on through Dani settlements with terraced fields and wild groves of sugar cane. All the time we have a wonderful view over the river and the narrow valley. In the early afternoon we reach the church of Seima where we will have our lunch surrounded by beautiful landscape. Before we reach Kurima another suspension bridge has to be crossed. This trek offers unique photo opportunities and our car will take us return to the Hotel in the late afternoon. (Easy walk in approx 3-4 hours). Lunch in box is provided and accommodation at hotel, dinner will be on your account.

Day 04: Mock Battle / Traditional Dance, Contilola Cave, Traditional Market (B/L/-).

A special welcome will be given to you upon your arrival in the Village; the tribe member will assemble wearing their best outfit to show their appreciation. The Tribe chief will stand on a Traditional Observation and give the order to his people to celebrate. A special “Mock Battle” is one of the most interesting exhibitions you will see on traveling to Papua. Photographer and moviemakers has said that this unique event cannot be described by words alone, you have to see it with your own eyes. Lunchboxes will be served in the villages. On our way back we will visit the famous Kontilola Cave. Stop at traditional market. Return to the Hotel in the late afternoon. Lunch in Box is provided. Dinner will be on your account

Day 05: By Flight To Jayapura and Next Destination (-/-/-).

The flight very early in the morning, without any breakfast, transfer at 05:00 am to airport for your flight to Jayapura at schedule at 06:15am. By direct flight for Sorong, Makasar, Jakarta or Denpasar.
